True Sport and Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)

In 2010, Community Foundations of Canada launched a pilot program with the True Sport Foundation to explore how communities can leverage the power of sport to make a positive impact.

Using an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, four community foundations (Abbotsford, Winnipeg, Burlington and Kitchener-Waterloo) worked to connect sport and non-sport organizations to build social capital through sport.

True Sport is a social movement powered by people who believe that sport can transform lives and communities.

Objectives

  • Build on the merits of a strengths-based approach as an alternative to existing funding models that reflect a more needs-based approach
  • Make connections between local sport, non-sport organizations and the community foundation
  • Provide financial support to explore how sport, as a local community asset, can be engaged to address local community issues
  • Share stories about the impact of the True Sport initiative in local communities

Impact

  • Committed $140,000 in grants to projects in participating communities
  • Making available an additional $200,000 in 2012-2013 to community foundations to engage community organizations and projects to build social capital
