Community Foundations and the Environment
1 % for the Planet
Community Foundations of Canada has forged a ground-breaking partnership with 1% for the Planet to provide a platform for community foundations to engage local businesses in environmental philanthropy.
1% for the Planet is an international alliance of businesses committed to leveraging their resources to create a healthier planet. Members donate at least 1% of their revenues or sales annually to environmental organizations worldwide.
Objectives
- Provide businesses with an innovative and highly visible way to give back to their communities and help the environment
- Build environmental endowment funds in communities across Canada
- Work one-on-one with businesses interested in directing their charitable giving to the environment
Impact
- CFC and Mountain Equipment Co-op worked together to raise the profile of 1% For the Planet in Canada
- Approximately 96 Canadian businesses are members
- Twelve community foundations are actively participating in the program including: Vancouver, Toronto, Stratford and Perth County, Red Deer, Sunshine Coast, Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities, Whistler, Banff, la Peninsule acadienne, Osprey, Winnipeg and Victoria.
